By default, Time Off does not include breaks. When creating a paid Time Off policy, you’ll define the day length as part of the policy setup. The day length you set in Time Off should reflect the total hours the employee is paid per day, including any breaks.

In Connecteam, breaks are set up within the Time Clock feature, and there are two types of breaks you can assign: paid and unpaid. The type of break you choose will determine the day length you need to set when creating your Time Off policies.

Let’s explore the possible scenarios for setting up breaks and how they impact the total day length to define in your policy:

Paid Breaks:

  • 8 hours + a 30-minute paid break = 8.5 working hours in total

  • 8 hours (including a paid break) = 8 hours in total

Unpaid Breaks:

  • 8 hours (including a 30-minute unpaid break) = 7.5 hours in total

  • 8.5 hours (including a 30-minute unpaid break) = 8 hours in total

The total working hours will be used as the basis for calculating your Time Off rate.

💡Tip: Double-check the employee’s schedule or your company policy to confirm if they’re entitled to paid breaks during their workday.

How to Include Paid Breaks in Time Off

You can set the day lengths by editing the Time Off policy:

  1. Access the Time Off from the left sidebar.

  2. Choose the specific Time Off policy you’re assigning to the employee.

  3. Click on Edit Policy to check you have set the right day length, to ensure it reflects the total paid hours per day, including any applicable breaks.
