During the planning and dispatching process of scheduling, managers need to get the full picture with all factors considered. Without considering breaks managers can't get the full picture, because they don't know how long a shift will be. They also can't ensure they comply with their country's laws regarding employees' work conditions. With Shift Breaks, managers can add paid or unpaid breaks to a shift, giving a more accurate idea of total shift hours and adding another layer of information for employees to see, help avoid confusion, and help meet regulations.

In this article, we'll go over:

Important note: Adding breaks to shifts in the Job Scheduler does not impact breaks in the Time Clock. Therefore, if you need users to track time, you still need to set up breaks in the Time Clock for them to clock in and out of breaks. You can learn how to set up breaks in the Time Clock using this article.

Adding Breaks on the Dashboard

To add a new break to a shift:

  1. Navigate to the Job Scheduler and open a schedule.

  2. Add a new shift or click on an existing shift.

  3. In the shift details, click on Add breaks.

  4. Choose from the default options or click Add break type.

  5. Add and break type, or if you add a new break type - add your break name, choose if it’s paid or unpaid the duration, and a start time (optional). This new break type is saved to the break types for future use.

  6. Click Add X breaks and that's it.

Note that multiple breaks can be added to a shift. A start time will always be optional giving you the most flexibility when scheduling these breaks.

💡Tip: Breaks can be added to shift templates making it easy for you to quickly dispatch shifts and never forget to add shifts. You can learn more about different schedule templates using this article.

Keep in mind:

  • Paid breaks are not deducted from the shift's total hours while unpaid breaks are deducted from the shift's total hours. Setting an unpaid break will change the total hour summary displayed in the schedule, in the weekly total summary, and in the List View.

  • The same break types are available across all schedules. Meaning, that if you add or remove a break type, the change will apply to all schedules in the account.

  • At the moment, adding a start time to a break is for visual purposes only.
