Connecteam's geofence feature allows you to ensure that employees are clocked in only when they are on site. Enabling the auto clock-out capability with a geofence automatically clocks out employees the moment they leave your designated worksites. This ensures you're only paying for actual hours spent on location, eliminates time inflation from forgotten clock-outs, and provides precise documentation of site time for projects, clients, and payroll.
In this article, we will cover:
How to Activate the Auto Clock-out from a Geo-Fence
Access the Time Clock feature from the left sidebar and select your Time clock
Click on Settings at the top right corner
Scroll down to the Geolocation tab
Please choose one of the following options:
Clock in & out and toggle on 'Users must enable location sharing in order to clock in & out'
Breadcrumbs (live-tracking)
On the same tab, head to the Geo-Fence section and click on Edit Sites.
A new modal will open; click again on + Add sites and set your Geofence with all its details: Site Name, Site Address, Fence Size, and Available jobs. To read more about how to create a Geo-Fence, click here.
At the bottom of the modal, you'll be asked to select what happens when a clocked-in user leaves the Geofence - you can choose to do nothing or to automatically clock them out. If you select to automatically clock them out, they will be auto-clocked out when they leave the site, provided their location services are enabled.
Here is an overview of the whole process:
How Auto Clock-Out from Geofence Works
The Auto Clock-Out feature uses location tracking and dynamic buffer zones to ensure accuracy and prevent unnecessary clock-outs.
The system collects location data every 20 meters to improve precision.
Buffer zones are adjusted dynamically based on GPS accuracy:
Up to 10-meter accuracy → 50-meter buffer
10–300 meters accuracy → 100 meter buffer
Over 300 meters accuracy → Reading is ignored.
Auto Clock-Out triggers when an employee is only clocked out if their entire GPS accuracy circle is fully outside the buffer zone. This prevents accidental clock-outs while employees are still at or near the worksite. The visuals below illustrate scenarios where auto clock-out is and isn't triggered.
How Will Auto Clock-Out from Geofence Appear on the Timesheet?
When viewing your employee's timesheets, you'll notice an indication of auto clock -out in the End time column, marked with a red exclamation mark. If you hover over this indicator, you'll see specific details such as "This shift ended automatically because Sara left the working zone"," Sara turned off her GPS," or "Sara turned off location permissions."
To view the Timesheet:
Head over to the Time Clock
Go into the Timesheet tab
Click on your employee's name
You will also see an indication for the Clock-out from the Today's tab in the Time Clock, where the map is.
What This Looks Like for Your Employees
When your employees leave the designated work site or turn off their GPS, they'll be automatically clocked out and receive a notification about it.
