The Chat Settings: Advanced Settings

Decide how users can use the messages, content, and files sent to chats

Written by Nathanel Creson

The Chat keeps all your company's communication in one app. Beyond the everyday conversation tools, the Advanced tab in your Chat settings gives owners a set of controls to shape how the chat behaves across your whole organization — from breaking down language barriers to protecting sensitive information and keeping conversation histories reliable.

In this article, we will specifically go over the Advanced Permissions capability inside the chat settings. If you are looking to learn about the Chat Permissions click here.

💡The Advanced tab settings are configured by the company owner and apply to the entire Chat feature — they can't be set per individual chat, group, or user.

How to Reach the Advanced Tab

1. Navigate to the Chat feature from the left sidebar.
2. Click the settings icon.
3. Select the Advanced tab from the left sidebar.
4. Adjust the settings below and save your changes.

Translation & Transcription

This section controls whether your team can translate messages written in other languages directly inside the chat — no need to copy messages into external tools or switch between apps. Translations appear in place within the conversation, making it easier to follow along and communicate across multilingual teams.

Voice messages sent in the chat are automatically transcribed into text, so your team can read what was said at a glance — handy for noisy environments, quick scanning, or anyone who prefers reading over listening.

Sharing settings

Sharing permissions determine whether information such as images, files, or messages can be shared outside of the Connecteam app — or even to other chats within the app. This is especially important for companies sending sensitive information: for example, a healthcare company that needs to abide by HIPAA or other privacy regulations may want sharing turned off, while a more relaxed company may be happy to leave it on. It's all up to you.

What You Can Set

Under Sharing Settings you'll find toggles that can each be turned on or off to control what can leave a conversation. Turn them off to keep sensitive content contained, or on for a more open sharing experience.

  • Users can forward messages and file attachments to other group chats and private conversations within the app

  • Users can share file attachments outside the app

  • Users can download and save images and videos shared in chat conversations.

Message Limitations

Giving users total freedom to edit or delete messages works well for informal banter, but it creates risk in professional and operational environments where accountability, record-keeping, and auditability matter. Message Limitations let owners set granular controls so chat histories stay reliable and trustworthy — balancing conversation flexibility with compliance and governance.

Editing & Deleting Time Limits

Owners can set how long users have to edit or delete their own sent messages. Choose from:
• 15 minutes
• 30 minutes
• 1 hour
Off — users have unlimited time to edit or delete their messages.

Once the time limit passes, the user can no longer edit or delete that message.

Allowing Chat Admins to Delete Others' Messages

Separately, owners can configure whether Chat Admins are allowed to delete messages sent by other users — regardless of when those messages were posted. Turn this on to give admins oversight of the conversation, or leave it off to limit deletion to each user's own messages within the time limit.
